This week I joined a friend for a spontaneous ‘Gita fuori porta’ or day trip outside the city walls of Rome to the beautiful hilltop town of Tivoli, just a 40 minute train ride from Roma Termini station.
The town once called Tibur by the ancient Romans, is a popular tourist destination for the magnificent gardens and water cascades of Villa d’ Este and for the ancient site of Villa Adriana, but few tourists venture to the dramatic parklands and ancient acropolis of Parco Villa Gregoriana.

Named after Pope Gregory XVI after he commissioned repair works from 1835, Parco Villa Gregoriana in the dramatic Aniene River Valley, consists of dense woodlands, waterfalls, caves, tunnels and sweeping views over the valley and beyond.
