One of the most unforgettable assignments I've shot in recent years was in Bosnia Herzegovina for this story in the New York Times Travel section - Where Sleeping Beauty Awakens.
The image that was chosen as the opener for the story and was also selected as one of the NYTimes; 22 of Our Favorite Travel Photos of 2019, is the same image that I've selected for the opening banner of my stock image website.
Travel assignment work is undoubtedly exhilarating, yet it often presents a myriad of challenges, including tight deadlines, unpredictable weather, logistical complexities, cultural nuances, and unexpected obstacles.
For this shot, I found myself confronting my fear of heights in a daunting scenario. Ascending a narrow spiral staircase within the towering minaret of a mosque, I grappled with a surge of claustrophobia. Midway through the ascent, my heart pounded as a startled pigeon darted past me, revealing a nest of freshly laid eggs on one of the steps. The moment almost causing me to lose my footing on the staircase.
Despite the overwhelming urge to retreat, I pressed on, driven by determination. As I reached the summit, a breathtaking panorama unfolded before me, as if crafted solely for my eyes. Overwhelmed with emotion, I couldn't help but shed tears of joy and relief as I captured the scene before me.
This is no doubt one of the highlights of my career so far, a testament to the rewards and gratification of overcoming your fears and obstacles in the pursuit of a great shot!
